Growing Information

EARLY CABBAGE for fresh market

1/4 lb/113 gr. of seed produces an acre of transplants. Direct seed @ 1 lb/454 g per acre. 6,000-8,000 seeds per oz/28 g

Cabbage can be grown on a wide range of soils, but do the best on well drained fertile sandy soil.

GREENHOUSE: For extra early crops, sow between Feb. 1st and Mar. 1st. Early Crops from Mar. 1st - Apr. 1st., 0.25 in/6 mm deep, cover with fine soil and firm. An oz/28 g sows four (12x20 in/31x51 cm flats @ 700-800 seedlings per flat. Maintain a high 80°F/27°C soil temp. for 4 or 5 days. After emergence, grow seedlings cooler @ 55-65°F/13-19°C to prevent soft leggy growth.

TRANSPLANT into Jiffy-7 peat pellets or peat pot strips, about 5 weeks from seeding - depending on day length. Move plants outside, 10 to 20 days later, after 3 or 4 days of hardening plants @ 45-50°F/8-10°C, (leave the sash off during the day). If properly conditioned by cooler temps., extra early cabbage can be set outside in late April, as soon as the ground can be worked - and will stand considerable frost.

FERTILIZE sandy land with 5-20-20 @ 650 lbs/293 kg per acre, broadcasted and worked into the soil before transplanting. Side dress lightly with the same, when transplanting and once again during your first cultivation. If cabbage root maggots are a problem during the early Spring, spray stems and roots of transplants with diazinon, at transplanting time. Make another application around the base of the plants one week later. Space rows 2.5-3 ft/76-91 cm apart, plants 12-16 in/31-41 cm apart.

DIRECT SEEDING: Direct seeding is not practical as an early crop, due to low soil temps. Use early varieties along with main crop types. Sow outdoors 0.25-0.5 in/1 cm deep from May 10th until June 15th @ 3 seeds per in/2.5 cm; you will pick up 10 to 14 days on a transplant crop.
