CHRYSANTHEMUM (Shasta Daisy)

Perennial

GREENHOUSE: For May sales of sturdy green plants in 2.25 in/6 cm peat pots, sow seed about Jan. 15th - Feb.15th (Oct. - Nov. sowings will provide slightly larger plants). Germinate at 60-65°F/16-18°C (maximum) for 20 days. Higher soil temps. will prevent germination. Like most Mums, these species are light sensitive. Do not cover the seed, just press them lightly into the soil to prevent them from washing down the side of the flat. Seeds require at least 8 or 9 hours of day light for proper germination. Grow seedlings cool, at 50-55°F/10-13°C. Transplant into peat pots (with nice sandy soil) by Mar. 15th. Control white fly, feed lightly. Early sowings may produce late fall flowers which should be cut immediately, so that plants are not weakened just before winter. Flower size and doubleness usually increases the second season. Plants are productive, long lasting cut flowers and bloom from June till frost each year.

DIRECT SEEDING: Sow seed Apr. 15th - May 15th outdoors, at 5 seeds per in/25 mm as above. Delay later sowings till Sept. 1st. These species like rich moist (not too wet) ground. Keep plants well watered and aphid free during hot summer months. Make divisions the second year during April. A first class cut flower!
