POPPY (Somniferum)
Annual 16 - 30 in/41 - 75 cm Approx. 260, 000 seeds per oz/28 g
GREENHOUSE: Seed anytime from April 30th to June 30th into soil-less mix. Press fine seed lightly into the soil - do not cover. Germinate at 70°F/21°C soil temperature for 10 days. Seedlings transplant easier than perennial types.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outdoors in late May as thinly as possible in groups of about 25 seeds spaced 1/4 in./6 mm apart. Thin to 12 in/31 cm apart, when seedlings are 2 in/5 cm high - transplanting the spare ones as you go. Keep seed pods picked off regularly in order to lengthen the flowering period. Annual Poppies make great cut flowers. They will last about one day, if cut while in bud and the stems are dipped in boiling water for a few seconds. Stems are rather weak and difficult to use in arrangements.
