Perennial Salvia
Salvia x superba
12-15 in/30-38 cm
Salvia x superba is one of the easiest perennials to grow from seed. Vernilization is not necessary. Seed sown from January to early March will produce sizable plants by May that will bloom during the summer that first year. Plant in a dry, sunny location. Does not tolerate overly wet growing conditions.
CULTURE: Sow seed 72°F/22°C soil temp for 5-14 days. Press lightly into soil but do not cover – seed requires light to germinate. Transplant or thin 15 days after germination. Reduce temps to 64°F/18°C to encourage root growth. Transplant into the garden after danger of frost.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow seed May 1st. Thin or space seedlings 10 in/25 cm apart. Plants tolerate drought once established. If the old flowering stalks are cut back promptly, they will re-bloom through fall.
