GREENHOUSE: Sow Feb. 1st - Mar. 1st for Spring bedding plant sales in May and June. Germinate at 80°F/27°C day, and 60°F/16°C night - soil temps., for 6 days. Press seed lightly into the surface, do not cover, as seed needs light to germinate. Cover seed flat with clear plastic to conserve moisture. Always use tempered, 70°F/21°C water. Grow seedlings at 65°F/18°C for about 3 weeks then lower to 50°F/10°C when seed leaves are fully developed. True double flowered types appear light green with somewhat larger leaves. The small percentage of dark green seedlings should be discarded when transplanting as these are the singles.
HOME GARDENER: Sow Apr. 1st outdoors (later sowings may not flower) fairly thickly, do not feed or thin as this forces earlier blooms. They like light sandy soil. Cut flowers are very fragrant and last longer if stem ends are bruised to increase water intake.
