GREENHOUSE: During the last few years, gourds and ornamental corn have become very popular items during the fall - at road side stands. Sow indoors April 15th in 3 in/8 cm. Jiffy Strips @ 3 seeds per pots, 1/4 or 1/2 in/6 or 13mm. deep - depending on seed size. Maintain 70°F/21°C soil temp. Transplant outside about June 10th. - just like squash. Dust plants with insecticide, just before setting out. Space plants 3 ft/91 cm apart, both ways.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outdoors like squash, June 10th. 1/4 - 1/2 in./6 - 13 mm deep. Space seeds @ 3 per hill in rows or trellis vines on a sturdy fence for cleaner fruit.
HARVEST: Pick when completely ripe, do not bruise fruit. Wash with a strong disinfectant to remove dirt and fungi - which may cause rot. Spread fruit on a raised screen so that they do not touch - to dry. Turn the fruit regularly during drying period - usually 3 - 4 weeks. When dry - wax fruit with a dry cloth and floor wax. Do not shellac - it tends to change color and appearance. Spray painting will not harm fruit.
