ERYSIMUM
Biennial - zones 4-6 8-12 in/20-30 cm 14,285 seeds per oz/28 g
Provides 2 seasons of color flowers in autumn from a spring sowing, over-winters in zones 4-6, then re-flowers in the spring like pansies and violas. No vernilization is needed to initiate flowering. Very heavy blooming, brightly colored, strong branching flowers have a nice clean fragrance. Plants are an excellent pansy/viola companion crop and do very well in larger 306 and 1801 premium paks and 4 in/10 cm pots or gallon containers. Used like stocks (matthiola) or cheiranthus.
CULTURE: Used and sold as an annual like pansies and violas. Crop time 11 to 12 weeks (about 1 week later than most pansies from seed). Sow in the greenhouse Jan. 15th to Feb. 15th. Cover seed lightly with a light and medium layer of vermiculite. Seeds should germinate in 2 to 4 days at 68-72°F/20-22°C. High humidity (95-97% relative humidity) is recommended during germination. Grow seedlings cooler at 65°F/18°C days and 60°F/15°C nights. To produce plugs with nice compact stretch-free seedlings - use Bonzi growth regulator at 10 ppm 3 weeks after germination. Lower greenhouse temps at this stage to 60°F/15°C days and 55°F/13°C nights after transplanting into 306 Premium paks or 4 in/10 cm pots for sale. Erysimum performs well when grown and matured under the same temperatures as pansies. Optimal outdoor growing temperatures range from 65-75°F/18-29°C days and 40-55°F/5-13°C nights.
