GREENHOUSE: Sow Feb. 15th to Mar. 15th for July blooms. Freeze seed for 5-7 days before sowing. Alternate soil temp. between 70°F/21°C day and 60°F/16°C night temp. for 7 days. 1/16th oz should provide 500 seedlings. Use lukewarm water. Grow seedlings @ 45-50°F/7-10°C for sturdier plants. Transplant about 4 weeks after seeding. Keep growing area well ventilated. Transplant fairly shallow, not too deep. Soil should not be too acid, preferably with a pH of 6.0.
DIRECT SEEDING: Sow thinly in rows May 15th. Cover seed with 1/8 in/13 mm fine soil and firm. About 20 days later, thin or transplant seedlings in the late afternoon. Both tall and dwarf types should be spaced 8 in/20 cm apart. Plants should bloom in early Aug. from a May sowing. Light winter protection will sustain plants until next spring. Cut flowers last 4-5 days or longer if bleach is added to the water to crystallize stems.
