Growing Information

Beit Alpha Type - Hybrid Cucumber

CULTURE: Delay outdoor direct seeding of all Beit Alpha types until outdoor soil temperatures reach 70ºF/21ºC, at least 2 weeks after your last spring frost. For indoor greenhouse transplants sow May 1st in 2 in/5 cm plug trays @ 2 seeds per cell. Maintain an indoor day temp of 70ºF/21ºC and at least 60ºF/16ºC at night. Transplant outdoors by June 15th when warm weather is settled. Plants will not survive frosts. Transplant 14 in/35 cm apart in rows 6 ft/1.8 m apart - or trellis prolific plant that matures lots of 6x1 in/16x3 cm dark green, smooth, very sweet, tender fruit. Similar in shape to regular slicing cucumbers - but much smaller, shorter and thinner. Fruit are bitter free (burpless) and seedless. Harvest smaller pickle size fruit as gherkins or mature fruit, which are better tasting than traditional slicing cucumbers. Plants are gynoecious (all female blossoms) for high yields. Harvest mature fruit in July and small gherkins 2 weeks earlier. Plants are adapted for open field summer production (not spring or fall). Can be grown under row covers or poly tunnels as weather turns cooler. Tolerant to CMV; WMV; PRSV; ZYMV; PM and DM. Foliage is non bitter which is not as attractive to cucumber beetles as some regular cucumber varieties.
