Growing Information

LEMON GRASS (Cymbopogon flexuosus)

CULTURE: Sow the seed from late January into individual pots or cell trays using a well-drained, disease-free, soilless media. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or sieved soilless media. To conserve moisture and heat, cover seed flats with clear glass or plastic. The soil temperature is critical for good germination. Germinate at a steady 70°F-72°F (20°C-22°C). Bottom heat might help, but germination can be erratic and take 21 to 40 days. Check the soilless media for dryness regularly being careful not to over water. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant clumps into larger cells/pots and grow in a warm, well lit place, avoiding direct sun light. When the minimum soil temperature is 45°F (7°C), transplant 3-4 in tall seedlings in clumps or as individual plants outdoors. The plants can be grown in containers, or spaced 8-12 in apart in rows that are 18” apart in full sun and in fertile and moist (but not water-logged) soil. Lemon grass doesn't tolerate frost. It can overwinter indoors and new plants can be started by division each spring. It rarely flowers as an annual.
