Suitable for Cutting:
CANDYTUFT - lberis sempervirens
Perennial (8-12 in/20-31 cm) Approx. 8,500-11,000 seeds per oz/28 g
This species is used as a dwarf, spreading, perennial bedding plant which will bloom in paks for spring sales from a late Aug. sowing or sold green in paks 10 weeks later from a Mar. 1st sowing for spring sales. Plants will bloom during May and early June, each year. Outdoor or direct sowings can be seeded 6 weeks before spring or fall frosts. Most pot plant growers use 3-4 in/8-10 cm pots for spring sales. Frequent applications (2 times per month) of weak fertilizer, in solution helps to establish nice stocky plants. Foliage is considered an evergreen in most climates, one of the earliest blooming perennials in the garden. This species should not be confused with the hyacinth flower type which is twice as tall and used as a fragrant cut flower. Sempervirens "Snow White" has a large white, flat flower umbel similar to the annual strain and is excellent for landscaping difficult areas like slopes, steep banks or road sides with spreading ground covers. It can also be used as a sweet smelling dwarf cut flower or re-potted as a house plant in the fall.
CULTURE: Germinate at 60°F/15°C days and 45-50°F/7-10°C night temps. for 3 weeks. Press seed into the soil surface but do not cover with soil. Allow at least 8-10 weeks from seed to sale for green plants, which do not flower the first season from seed. Grow plants cool @ 50°F/10°C after transplanting into pots or paks for sale.
