Latin Name: Bergenia cordifolia
Item #: P1830
New This Year
Perennial (15 in/38 cm) 114,000 seeds per oz/28 g
CULTURE: Sow indoors De. - June, allow 3-6 months to produce saleable plants which flower in March/April outdoors. Freeze seed for 72 hrs. before sowing to break dormancy. Germinate at 70°F/21°C for 15 days. Press seed into soil. Do not cover due to slow growth, sow direct into larger cell trays. This helps to speed up production. Grow plants @ 58-65°F/14-18°C for 9 weeks. Requires long day length to flower. Some can be transplanted into small pots before setting in quart or gallon containers. Roots must be firmly anchored or cold temperatures and over-watering will lead to root rot. For outdoor planting, transplant 12-24 in/30-60 cm apart. Bergenia prefer deep, well drained soil which is fairly rich. Mulch with coarse leaves, pine branches or hay for winter protection. Division is successful in spring or fall. Remove damaged leaves and spent flower stalks as needed. Be alert for slug damage. Glossy foliage is used for flower arrangements as contrasting greenery for ferns. Very hardy zones are 3-8.
