Suitable for Containers:
8 in/20 cm annual 44,800 seeds per oz/28 gr
A low, spreading purple foliage plant fills containers well, cascading over the edges as branches get longer and heavier. Ideal for mixed containers or used as a single basket item. This purple leafed accent plant can also be used as a low, prostrate ground cover in semi shade or shaded areas- spreads 3-4 ft/1-1.2 m.
CULTURE: Sow Feb. 1st-15th. Allow 11-14 weeks for finished 4 in/10 cm pots or 10"/25 cm hanging baskets. Cover seed lightly with coarse, vermiculite. Germinate @ 74°F/23°C for 4 days. Use well drained soil or a medium with a pH of 5.5 to 6.3. As seedlings appear, lower air temps to about 65-72°F/11-22°C. Additional light @ 5,000 fast candles (54,000 Lux) is beneficial to speed up seedling maturity providing that air temps do not exceed 70-72°F/21-22°C. Maintain a 95% humidity level until seedlings appear, then reduce moisture levels. Do not allow seedlings to wilt. Grow plants cooler @ 62-65°F/18-24°C. Allow plants to dry slightly, between watering. Lower light levels result in bronze/green foliage. Higher light levels result in deeper purple foliage. Red foliage is a sign that plants are underfed. Use fertilizers once a week with 150-200ppm N in a complete fertilizer. No pinching or growth regulators are needed for this species. Plant with coleus and impatiens in partial shade.
