GREENHOUSE: For florist or outdoor culture, malacoides type will not cause skin irritation like obconicas. Sow in May for 5 in/13 cm pots which flower in January. July sowings flower in March - April. Do not seed after Oct 15th as plant results in blind growth - no flower! Germinate at 65°F/l 8°C for 4 weeks. Do not cover seed - it needs light to sprout. Sow in a mixture of equal parts of peat moss, soil and vermiculite. Keep seed flat in a cool 55- 60°F/l3 - 16°C area during germination. Those hot summer days of 85- 90°F/29-32°C will sometimes prevent germination! Grow seedlings at 40- 45°F/ 4 - 7°C Transplant into 2 1/4 in/6 cm peat pots, then into 5 in./l 3 cm pots. Set crown of plant just above soil level. Keep plants fed to encourage active growth, and keep shaded to brighten colors.
SMALL GROWER: Sow in rows outdoors in June; thinly press seed into soil, do not cover. Transplant 2 in/5 cm apart in late July, 12 in./31 cm apart in October, before frost.
