Nature provides us with a ready palette of lovely colors. Throughout history, flowers, vegetables and spices were used to dye fabrics, and we can still use them today. It’s exciting to see what rich colors you can simply get with what’s growing right in your own backyard as an alternative to chemically dyed products.

This collection of Carrot, Beets, Lavender, Spinach and Marigolds will produce beautiful rich colors for your next design.

Method:

· Soak the fabric in 4 parts cold water to 1 part vinegar solution for an hour, then rinse well with cold water and squeeze out excess.

· Chop plant material into small pieces and place in a pot. Double the amount of water to plant material. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about an hour. Strain. Now you can add your fabric to be dyed. You want enough water for the fabric to move freely in the dye bath so that it can absorb the dye evenly across the garment. For a stronger shade, allow material to soak in the dye overnight.

· Wear rubber gloves to handle the fabric that has been dyed, the dye can stain your hands.
