CENTAUREA

Perennial 2 ft/51 cm Approx. 1,200 seeds per oz/28 g

CULTURE: Sow seed 72°F/22°C soil temp. 0.25 in/6 mm deep. Seed germinates quite irregularly over a period of about 7-14 days. Grow at 55°F/13°C. Crop time is 10-12 weeks.

DIRECT SOWING: Sow seed 0.25 in/6 mm deep May 1st. Thin or space seedlings 16 in/41 cm apart. Plants are rampant self seeders and require frequent divisions to prevent a weedy appearance. Make fall divisions from a spring sowing, the same year to keep plants tidy. After plants have flowered each spring, cut back stems to ground level to induce fall flowering and new root system before winter. Prevent rust disease with a fungicide. This hardy perennial species likes well drained, light sandy soil with full sun. Established plants are drought resistant and almost indestructible. It is easy to grow, and the perfect choice for hard to reach areas in the garden. A giant, deep blue cut flower for July and Sept. blooms - blooms may average 3 in/8 cm in diameter.
