KOCHIA (Burning Bush)
Annual 30 in/76 cm Approx. 28,000 seeds per oz/28 g
CULTURE: Sow indoors Mar. 20th - Apr. 15th. Germinate 65-75°F/18-24°C soil temperatures. Grow at 60°F/16°C. Sow seed 1/8 in/3 mm deep. Do not cover - seed needs light to germinate. Never over water seedlings. Transplant into paks 5 weeks after seeding.
DIRECT SEEDING: Easily grown from seed outdoors in a very sunny location. Sow May 15th. Scatter seeds thinly in rows 12 in/31 cm wide. Thin seedlings to 18 in/46 cm apart. Plants mature slowly at first, but with the advent of warm weather provide 30 in/76 cm, bushy green hedges by early July. Cool fall weather turns foliage deep crimson until frost. Kochia will drop hundreds of seeds in the fall, which will spawn a "forest" of spring seedlings - with a weed-like vengeance! Some heavy weeding may be in order next Spring. Kochia may be shaped with shears, just like a real hedge. They are good for windy locations, and thrive in hot, dry, average soil. Plants will tolerate the hottest summer.
