SALPIGLOSSIS (Painted Tongue)
Annual (25 in/64 cm) Approx. 125,000 seeds per oz/28 g
GREENHOUSE: For early summer blooms sow seed very thinly, indoors Mar. 1st. Germinate at 80°F/27°C soil temperature for 12-15 days in total darkness. Press fine seed into the surface and do not cover with soil. Maintain an air temperature of 75°F/24°C days and 60°F/16°C nights for 2 weeks after germination. Grow transplants at 60°F/16°C to prevent soft growth. Plants should be ready for sale or outdoor transplanting about 10-12 weeks from seeding. Salpiglossis make excellent cut flowers, stems are wiry and strong.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outdoors June 1st when soil temps are high enough. Thin seedlings or space transplants 12 in/31 cm apart. Use as a multicolored back-ground subject. Plant in groups of 10 plants, between perennials or other annuals. They need full sun, fertile soil, protection from the wind, and some support for the plants at full maturity for those heavy flower heads.
