GREENHOUSE: A popular pot plant for mid winter sales or as cut flower material. Germinate at 60°F/16°C soil temp., press fine seed into the surface of the soil. Seed sprouts in about 15 days in total darkness. Plants must be allowed to become pot bound during fall months (from an Aug. 10th sowing) to induce early flowering during mid winter months. Grow the taller strain for mid winter cutting material. For annual box plant sales in May, sow seed by Jan. 1st.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outdoors by May 1st. for late July cut flowers. Several sowings 10 days apart will provide cut flowers throughout most of the summer months. Transplant 12 in/31 cm apart. They do best during cool weather, plants bloom profusely over a short period. Schizanthus likes full sun or light shade and moist soil. Plants flourish in areas where night summer temps. drop below 65°F/18°C. An excellent house pot plant and a great cut flower!
