GREENHOUSE: For May bedding plant sales sow indoors from Feb. 15th - Mar. 15th at 80°F/27°C soil temperature. Over watering seedlings can be your only problem so we like to use a seedling mix, rather than soil as a growing medium. Moisten the seedling mix thoroughly with warm water before seeding. Sow seed thinly 1/8 in/3 mm deep, cover seed lightly with the fine sand or mix. Germinate in total darkness for 14 days maintaining lots of bottom heat. Transplant seedlings as soon as possible at the same depth as former seedlings. Use a sandy soil mix. Grow slow and steady at 60-70°F/16-21°C to prevent soft spindly growth. Water seedlings sparingly with luke warm water. Plants grow very slowly and will damp off easily if over-watered. Keep transplants in a well ventilated area, treat plants with a fungicide every 14 days. Harden plants off at 55°F/13°C for 2 weeks before sale. Lower temperatures and cold damp conditions will cause problems.
NOTE: Outdoor sowings will not mature before frost. Sow seed indoors Apr. 1st - Apr. 15th (no later) for July blooms. Seed directly into Jiffy-7 peat pellets (4 seeds per pot). Thin to the strongest seedling about mid May. Transplant outdoors June 15th in hot, dry sunny location. Provides blooms till frost. Easily propagated from seed.
