DOUBLE MORNING GLORY (Ipomea)
Annual 6 ft/2 m
CULTURE: Sow indoors March 15th, 1/2 inch deep in compost or sandy soil. Soak hard seeds in water for 24 hours or nick seeds with a sharp knife to aid germination. Maintain 70°F/21°C soil temps, keep moist until seedlings appear. All Morning Glories seem to do better when direct seeded into pots before germinating. Sow 2 seeds per pot. Use 3 in/8 cm pots, insert a small 6 in/15 cm stake in each pot to encourage climbing and prevent seedlings from being entangled. Transplant seedlings into pots before they get too tall, do it about 10 days after seedlings appear to avoid transplanting shock. Transplant outdoors by mid-June 12 in/30 cm apart. Crop time 80 days. Blooms July-Oct. 90% plus germination.
DIRECT SOWING: In milder climates, seed may be sown outdoors after soaking, when day soil temp. reaches 65-70ºF/18-21ºC. Try to sow the seed where you plan to grow as Morning Glories are somewhat difficult to transplant. Thin or transplant when plants are 3 in/8 cm tall to 6 in/15 cm apart and support with stakes or trellis. Thrives in regular soil, blooms all summer in semi-shade or direct sun.
