LAVATERA (Tree Mallow)

Annual 24 in/60 cm Approx. 3,000 seeds per oz/28 g

CULTURE: Tree Mallows are rather hard to transplant, so plant seeds where they are to bloom. Seeds are fairly hard, and should be soaked in warm water for 48 hours before planting. Sow outdoors May 20th in warm 60-65°F/16-18°C soil. Space seed out in rows or groups @ 1 seed per in/25 mm; 1/4 in/6 mm deep, cover with fine soil and firm. Seeds germinate in about 20 days. Thin seedlings to 2 ft/61 cm apart. Tree Mallows are related to Hibiscus and are quite similar in appearance with single hollyhock, flowers average 4 in/10 cm in diameter. Plants grow about 2 ft/61 cm high and have hairy stems with maple like leaves. They are easy to grow and flourish in ordinary, well drained soils with a sunny exposure. Tree Mallows make fine medium height hedges or wind screens. Blooms provide striking, though short lived cut flowers.
