GREENHOUSE: Sow Mar. 15th at 75°F/24°C soil temp. for 12 days. Maintain an air temp. of 75°F/24°C days and 60°F/16°C nights for about 2 weeks after germination. Transplant into paks 5 weeks after seeding. Grow plants at 55°F/13°C to prevent soft spindly growth. Plants should be ready for sale about 10-12 weeks from seeding, and bloom in July from a March sowing. Scabiosa is also used as a long stemmed cut flower by florists.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outdoors May 20th for Aug. 15th blooms. Sow small seed heads 0.25-0.5 in/6-13 mm deep, cover seed lightly and firm with soil. Seeds should germinate in 2 weeks. Thin seedlings 10 in/25 cm apart. Choose a well drained sandy soil which is fertile and in a sunny location. Huge 3 in/8 cm flower heads resemble a pincushion and have an unusual color range. Use with other annuals or by themselves in massed beds. Annual Scabiosa is a handsome, long lasting cut flower.
