CHRISTMAS PEPPER & CHERRY

6,000 seeds per oz/28 gr. Annual (6-12 in/15-31 cm)

CULTURE: Both the Solanum (Cherry) and Capsicum (Pepper) species are fairly easy to grow pot plants. There are slight differences in their culture. Sow cherries Feb. 15th and peppers April 15th. Germinate both @ 70°F/21°C soil temp. for 10 to 14 days. Jiffy Mix is an ideal medium. You can cover the smaller cherry seed, it seems to be either light responsive or perhaps just generally weaker in seed vigor and germinates better if it is pressed lightly into the surface. Grow both types @ 50°F/10°C. Transplant each type into well drained sandy soil with a pH of about 6.0 (not too acid). Use 2.25 in/6 cm peat pots for both. Shift the cherries to 4 in/10 cm pots in May, just before setting them outside to prevent root systems from becoming pot bound or restricted. Leave peppers in 2.25 in/6 mm pots. Move both types outside 10-12 in/25-31 cm apart, about June 15th when the soil warms up. Pinch back the cherry foliage occasionally from May to July 1st, no later. Protect both from aphids during summer months, do not let them dry right out. Plants set fruit in Aug. Lift both types in Sept. By this time, root systems are rather large, and careful handling will prevent plants from loosing their leaves. For maximum fruit size, both types must be grown outdoors during the summer.
