SWEET PEAS

CULTURE: For fall or winter crops: Sow in July for Nov. to Feb. harvests and Aug. to Nov. 15th for March through Easter cuttings, with best quality in April-May. Germinate seed in 2.25 square Jiffy Strips, 0.5 in/13 mm deep at 55°F/13°C soil temp. for 14 days. Cover seeds with fine soil and firm. Place pots in total darkness (cover with black plastic or newspaper. Soil must be sterilized to avoid rot, pH slightly alkaline and well drained. Transplant into rows 6 in/15 cm apart. Support plants when 10 in/25 cm high, with string or wire 7 ft/2 m high and 3 in/8 cm apart. Grow cool at 45°F/7°C nights and 60°F/16°C days.
FOR MAY PLANTINGS: Early indoor sowings avoid hot weather damage. Germinate in a wet paper towel or sow in peat pots by March 15th. Transplant outside by May 15th.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outside April 1st as soon as soil can be worked, 1.5 in/4 cm deep and 0.5 in/13 mm apart (2 or 3 peas per in/25 mm). Prefers rich, heavy soil and does not do well in sand. Keep moist in dry weather and well sprayed for aphids. Cut flowers last 4-5 days or longer if Everbloom is added to the water.
