DIANTHUS

Perennial 8 - 12 in/20 - 31 cm, seed size varies according to type.

CULTURE: There are three types - 

(a) Plumarius
 - Ballad Blend seeds germinate slowly and over a very long period. The best colors sprout last and are the smallest seedlings. Sow indoors Feb. 1st to March 15th Freeze seed for 14 days Germinate 65°F to 75°F/l 8°C to 24°C for 30 days. Sow seed in 2 1/4 in/6 cm peat pots; press seed into the soil surface. Transplant outdoors 12 in/31 cm apart. Plants are very dwarf, with gray foliage and 1 1/2 in/4 cm red, white and pink fragrant blooms, which flower during May and June, 12 months from seed. Sow outdoors in late fall for spring plants.

(b) Arenarius - Maiden Pinks. Sow indoors Feb. 15th to March 15th @ 1/8 in/3 mm deep into 2 1/4 in/6 cm peat pots. Germinate @ 70°F/21°C soil temp. for 8 to 10 days.

(c) Deltoides - Red Maiden Same culture as White Maiden. Both are fragrant rock garden subjects which may be sown outdoors May 15th. Thin both 8 in/20 cm apart. Keep seed pods picked off during flowering period.
