Marine Bells (Browallia)
Latin Name: B. speciosa major
Item #: 714D
Approx. 120,000 seeds per oz./28 gr.
GREENHOUSE: Sow Dec. 1st. for Mother's Day pots; Mar. 1st. for bedding plant growers to provide Summer blooms; or Aug. for winter pot plants. Germinate seed @ 70°F/21°C for 20 days. Do not cover seed with soil - it needs light to germinate. After germination, grow @ 65°F/18°C. Browellias transplant easily into 5 in/13 cm pots of Jiffy Mix and sand. Grow plants @ 60°F/16°C. To encourage compact well shaped plants, grow closer to the glass and pinch when necessary. Too much fertilizer at this point creates too much plant growth at the expense of the blooms. Harden off slightly before setting plants outdoors in June. They will not stand those cold, early June nights. Use in hanging baskets or as a border plant.
DIRECT SEEDING: Sow outdoors in June, when ground warms up. Follow directions above. Thin to 6 or 8 in./15 or 20 cm. apart. Sow indoors 8 - 10 weeks prior to warm weather. Do not set plants outside until all the leaves are on the trees. Keep moist and fertilize lightly during warm weather. Lift plants in the fall for a winter pot plant. Pinch back foliage. Spray for white fly.
