ORNAMENTAL GRASS
Annual 18 - 36 in/46-91 cm / Seed size varies according to type.
CULTURE: Because we are dealing with several different types of seeds and species, you will have to be a bit flexible in your sowing methods. Seed is either very small or very large. If you are selling the plants in paks or flats, sow the seed directly into containers. Large hard seeds like Job's Tears should be soaked for 48 hrs. to stimulate faster germination. Smaller seeds should be pressed into the soil and covered lightly with fine soil. Growers should seed this item between March 1st and April 15th, be patient - each species germinates at a different speed (from 5 days to 20 days). Maintain a soil temp. of 60 - 70°F/18 - 21°C during germination period. For outdoor sowings, spread seed thinly and transplant seedlings of all types 18 in./46 cm apart.
USES: Ornamental Grasses are principal subjects for Everlasting or dried winter bouquets. Most species including job's tears, briza and pennisetum are cut for their unique seed heads. Therefore, they must be harvested in late August before they go to seed. Cut grasses when the seed heads are fully expanded, and hang them upside down for 2 or 3 days before you attempt to handle them.
