TORENIA (Wishbone Flower)

GREENHOUSE: Sometimes used as a bushy potted plant or for hanging baskets. A native of Vietnam, Torenia has small bi-colored pansy - faced blooms. The pair of stamens in the throat of the bloom are bent in the shape of a chicken's wishbone - hence the name 'Wishbone Flower". Sow indoors Feb. 1st. about 10 - 12 weeks before your last frost. Press fine seed into the soil, cover with a light dusting of soil. Germinate @ 70°F/21°C for 10 days. Grow seedlings @ 70°F/21°C day and 60°F/16°C night temps, for about 2 weeks. After transplants are established (4 - 5 days) lower growing temp. to 55°F/13°C to prevent rank growth. Potted plants or hanging baskets should be ready for sale in 12 - 16 weeks from seeding. Plants can be set outdoors about June 1st, Sow Feb. 10th - 15th for nice sized plants for florist combination work.
DIRECT SOWING: Sow outdoors May 15th. - June 1st. Sow thinly in borders, press seed into the surface. Thin seedlings to 6 - 8 in./15 - 20 cm. apart. Plants like semi shade or full sun if nights are cool - and moist soil. Pot a few plants for the house, 6 - 8 weeks before your first fall frost.
