ORNAMENTAL GRASS - Carex Sedge

The Carex species belongs to an enormous genus of over 2000 grass-like sedges, which are tender perennials - hardy in zones 5 to 6. They are generally sold as annual ground covers in the Northeast and can be used in both formal and informal landscapes, wooded settings, massed beds or large mixed containers. Carex types are widely adapted to north or south outdoor conditions and can be sown from December through April and transplanted from February thru June so that plants may be sold from May through September. If you use plugs of Carex types, they should be ready for transplanting into finished containers in 6 to 7 weeks.

CULTURE::In the Northeast, sow Feb 10th into 288 cell plastic trays or 2 in/5 cm pots at 6 seeds per cell or pot to produce a clumping effect. Use a good, well drained, disease free soil-less mix with a pH of 6 or 7. Press the seeds into the surface and cover lightly with vermiculite. Moisten the soil surface thoroughly and cover the container with plastic, exposing the containers to normal light until the seeds germinate, which should take about 3 weeks. Maintain a temperature of 65°F/18°C. Transplant into 4 in/10 cm pots when seedlings are large enough to handle and lower temps to about 60°F/15.5°C. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost, 12-18 in/30-45 cm apart. Plants prefer full sun. Crop time 16 to 17 weeks.
